Yehiam Fortress

By Ryan Jones

No one is quite sure when Yehiam Fortress was built, but it was part of a major defensive settlement in the Western Galilee, along with nearby Montfort Castle, during the Crusader period. The fortress was later captured and destroyed by the royal sultan Baybars.

When the original settlers of Kibbutz Yehiam settled the site in 1946, they used the strong walls of the fortress to defend against Bedouin raids and later to protect themselves while under siege during the Israeli War of Independence.

Much of the fortress has been restored and is open to the public. Visitors are also invited to watch a film presentation about the role the fortress and the members of Kibbutz Yehiam played in the War of Independence.
