Herodion Quarter

Following Israel's War of Independence in 1948, Jordan retained control of Jerusalem's Old City and expelled its Jewish inhabitants. During the 19 years between the War of Independence and the 1967 reunification of Jerusalem following the Six Day War, the Jordanians systematically destroyed the ancient Jewish Quarter of the Old City.
The Jordanian's wanton destruction of the Jewish Quarter allowed archeologists to carry out extensive excavations before rebuilding the area following the Six Day War. The fruits of these excavations can now be viewed in a large archeological park/museum situated beneath the present-day Jewish Quarter.
The site contains excavations and restorations of many Upper City dwellings from the time of the Second Temple. The most splendid of these has been dubbed the "Palatial Mansion" and is representative of the beautiful architecture typical of the Upper City area during this time.
The Herodian Quarter is a definite "must see" for any visitor to Jerusalem.
