
So Joshua took the whole land, according to all that the LORD had said to Moses; and Joshua gave it as an inheritance to Israel according to their divisions by their tribes. Then the land rested from war. (Joshua 11:23)
When the children of Israel returned to their ancient homeland over 400 years after their fore-fathers left to go down to Egypt, they found an inhabited country, with populated towns and cultivated fields.
Notwithstanding this, and not doubting their right to their inheritance, the Israelites embarked on a campaign under Joshua to conquer Canaan and establish their ownership.
Just how they went about that conquest - the Divine directive, the military campaign, the consequences for their future as a nation - will be the subject of this feature.
